Tirunesh Dibaba is a long distance track athlete. She holds both indoor and outdoor 5000m world records. She is the current Olympic 5000m and 10000m champion and has also won four world track titles and five world cross country contexts. Her electrifying pace over the final lap in Beijing, has brought her to become the first women’s track distance double in Olympic history.
Born in Chefa, a small regional town in Arsi zone of the Oromia region, southwest of Addis Abeba,
she began doing athletics at the age of 14. To enhance her innate ability and natural sport endowment she moved to Addis Abeba in 2000 and for good reason.
Tirunesh is part of an athletic family, with older sister Ejegayehu also making her mark on the international stage and her brother Dejene expected to be a future star. Their sister Genzebe won the junior race at the 2008 World Cross Country Championships. Deratu Tulu, 1992 and 2000 Olympic champion is also their cousin. All said, Tirunesh is possibly the best female long-distance runner in the world at the moment.
Since it’s foundation in 2007, Alfa Athletics Club has grown to become a prominent sport organization in Ethiopia. Alfa Athletics Club is moving from national to international level while keeping the hallmark and the rich tradition of Ethiopian athletics history.
